A Field in Chester

There is an ongoing and fierce debate as to the origins of the Chesterfield Sofa. Some attribute the style to the Earl of Chesterfield who commissioned the first sofa in this memorable style several hundred years ago back in the 18th century. Others proclaim the first one was created by a chap called Chester in a field.

We can’t say for sure what the origins of the Chesterfield are. We will leave it to historians to fight that one out.

What we can say is that fortunately, unlike flared trousers, this timeless and iconic style of furniture will remain fashionable for many hundreds of years to come.
